ANYONE CAN DELIVER A GREAT COMEDY AUDITION AND PERFORMANCE!

Secrets to Standing Out at an Audition and
How to Leave Them Laughing

ONE-DAY SEMINAR WITH NEIL GORDON
Saturday, November 7th, 2015
10am-5pm

It’s a fact: Anyone can do comedy. Whether you have a good grasp of comedy or you are convinced that you’re horrible at it, Neil Gordon’s one-day seminar will radically change the way you see yourself and perform comedy.neil gordon actors workout studio seminar

Let’s face it. If you’re an actor, you have to be able to perform comedy. Comedy shows can launch unknown actors into mega-stardom in an extremely short period of time.

The mistake most comedy technique classes make is trying to mold you into a character by pushing you to do something you can’t. Neil uses each actor’s strengths to mold a comedy performance and teaches you how to adapt these strengths to each character.

Neil also teaches his students the “Politics Of Auditioning.”

How to analyze the scene and understand what the writers and directors are attempting to do. That way, the actor can add to the character and enhance the comedy material.

bar 8Cristina Cox sent this to me and I think it’s worth a read again. I put it in the last newsletter but thought it’s worth repeating in case you didn’t get to read it then. We have this conversation frequently in class, especially when actors feel like they are losing touch with their passion, or in a state of helplessness.

I like to believe that AWS offers these opportunities for many actors.

Have a great summer!

bar 10“We are in the business of transforming actors’ lives, one at a time. This involves each actor getting individualized coaching, where we work to break through their specific issues, by taking them “through” their blocks to the next level. That is why we keep our classes small and focus on each actor’s individuality, talent, and uniqueness. Here, they discover what makes them different than the rest, hence their “Vein of Gold”. We are proud that this is what makes the Actors Workout Studio different and more distinct than many schools around town.”

“Night at The Park” One-Act Plays at AWS

Each week, this writers’ group will meet to develop, write, and polish one-act plays designed to be put up on stage at the Actors Workout Studio.

This group will include everyone, from published writers who are looking to put up a new piece to beginning writers who don’t know how to start a one-act, but want to try. Writers can come to the group with nothing but an idea (or not even that; just a desire to write), a completed draft, or anything in between. The group is free-flowing and designed to meet the writer wherever they are in their craft or process.

Here are the only “rules:”

  • The play must be set in a park
  • It must be a one-act of no more than 15 pages

Writers can bring in a variety of material to be workshopped. This can include (but is not limited to) the following list:
If you have something else you’d like to try, great!

  • Pitch an idea or story
  • Do an improv (with actors) to dig deeper into the story and characters
  • Go over a beat sheet or breakdown
  • Open up a discussion about your characters (you might even cast an actor as your character or cast YOURSELF as that character and answer questions in character)
  • Read the opening or ending of your draft (with or without actors)
  • Cold Read a few pages or entire draft (assign actors who are in the group that day)
  • Cast actors prior to the meeting and do a prepared read (you can use actors already in the group or bring in your own people).

To attend, email the Actors Workout Studio and we will contact you with more details.
**If you are a member of AWS, this is part of your curriculum.** If you are an outside writer interested in attending, there will be a small tuition.stephanie storey

If you have any questions, please free to call Caitlin at the Actors Workout Studio at (818) 766-2171.

A Unique Acting Program: The First 6 weeks

The Los Angeles Acting Studio and the Actors Workout Studio offer a safe and challenging work environment. The Studio is dedicated to training and preparing actors for real world application to work in the film and television industry.

The Total Immersion Summer Acting program is a specifically-designed and tried accelerated program for young actors to be rigorously trained daily for six weeks by our team of veteran teachers. This is a program rooted in the Meisner Technique as well as several elements of other techniques. Please refer to both sites in order to better understand what we teach: actorsworkout.com and actingcoach.tv

The first 6 weeks includes:
Scene Study
Cold Reading/Audition Technique
Improvisation
Script Analysis
On-Camera Technique
Actor’s Emotional Instrument
The Business of Acting

“18 to play Younger” Industry Showcase: The Final Two Weeks

In the final two weeks of the Total Immersion Summer Acting Program, our students are then immersed in a creative rehearsal process for an original ensemble production developed with their newfound improv skills. Our team writes, directs and develops this production to highlight each actor’s personal strengths to introduce them into the Los Angeles Entertainment Industry. The Showcase is a two-performance entertainment industry event. Directly following each showcase performance, there will be a meet and greet catered lunch with our industry guests. We are the only studio in Los Angeles that offers this unique opportunity for young actors.

Time Commitment

  • Classes meet Monday through Friday 10.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. for the first 6 weeks.
  • 20 Hours per week. 120 hours total.
  • Rehearsals for showcase will be scheduled from 10.00 a.m-5.00 p.m. for the final two Weeks.
  • 80 Rehearsal hours.
  • Classes begin Monday June 22, 2015 and end Friday August 14, 2015.

Your Commitment

Before you even apply for this program, we want you to truly ask yourself if you are ready for this commitment to yourself. As an actor, you will be challenged daily. You will be asked to be open, honest, vulnerable and emotionally available. The training is rigorous and requires your passion, courage, concentration and discipline. We train actors to be able to work on any film and television set. Are you ready to immerse yourself in this training and rehearsal process? Will you be ready to be showcased in an original production? The showcase production “18 to Play Younger” will be created and tailored for you and your fellow classmates by working professionals. Do you have what it takes to be seen by and introduced to Los Angeles Agents and Casting Directors? Are you ready? If the answer is YES, then we ask you to confidently apply and take advantage of this rare time in your life to be professionally trained and start your career as an actor in Los Angeles.

Why Choose Us?

We offer the most unique and innovative summer acting program in the country – there is no program comparable. Most acting schools that offer summer programs assign the lower level teachers to teach the various classes. We offer master teachers who have all been teaching for over two decades. Our teachers will coach each actor individually within the classes and communicate with the other teachers to bring out the best in each actor. Our teachers have taught hundreds of working actors, and know what it takes to be a working actor in today’s industry.

The young actors in this program will also have the opportunity to attend the open workouts we offer at the studio. This will give the students an opportunity to work with older, more seasoned working actors – something other acting programs could never offer. We truly care about actors and really want our talent to be introduced to the entertainment industry in the best light possible.

The “18 to Play Younger” industry showcase will be an original production designed personally for the elite actors in our program. We offer our actors the collaborative experience of working with industry professionals to write and direct this one of a kind showcase. Most acting schools don’t even offer a showcase for their summer students, let alone a real-world Hollywood showcase. We know that L.A. industry professionals want to see interesting new talent in this age range, especially actors that are trained to work on film and television sets.

We are not saying that this is the only training a young actor will ever need; most of our students have studied with us off and on for several years. We are saying that this program will offer you a solid acting foundation and a strong sense of who you are as an actor, and a confident introduction into the Los Angeles entertainment industry.

Enrollment in our 8 week summer Total Immersion Acting program and “18 to Play Younger” Industry Showcase is by audition, interview and application. Applications will be accepted April 2015 through June 5, 2015. It is imperative that students speak understandable English to apply. The studio is located in the NoHo Arts district (North Hollywood) and within walking distance of all major metro and bus lines. We are willing to help accepted students that might want to room together during the program connect with each other. We invite you to come study, perform and have fun in Los Angeles this summer.

The summer 8 week total immersion Acting Program and “18 to Play Younger” Industry showcase is a certificate program. On the final day, our elite actors will receive a certificate of completion for 200 hours of hard work.

Top 6 Things Every Actors Needs

Top 6 things every actor needs!

Top 6 things every actor needs!Written by Fran Montano. Article originally posted on NoHo Arts Disctrict Blog.

Are you a professional actor or a hobbyist?
So many people call themselves actors. It’s easy, just say you are.

Everyone accepts that actors are unemployed most of the time so anyone can say it. People come to town and want to be an actor so they tell people they are. They get pictures, and then do a few things that make them feel like an actor. If you consider yourself to be a professional actor and this is your dream, then you need to take your work and “the work” seriously.

Here is what I tell new actors coming to LA as well as established actors that are working at it. There are some basic things that need to be taken care of:

1. A place to live in the LA area.

2. A phone and internet access.

3. A stream of income to live off of – A job – full time or part time, with the flexibility that can accommodate you, so you can pursue your career. If no job, then some source of income to sustain you.

4. Some good clothes to present yourself professionally.

5. A form of transportation to get you where you need to go.

6. A “home base” where you train, work out, and work on your craft.Of course there are many other things to consider – photos, agent, union membership, reel, doctors, a good mechanic, etc, but I want to talk about the basics for a moment. Some people will look at this and say this is simple and obvious. Many people blow it at item #3. They might have 6 months of savings to live off and plan to “make it” by then. That doesn’t work, they are usually gone or looking for work desperately soon.

But here is the biggest miss I see. I can’t tell you how many actors don’t do enough about the last item – #6: a “place to work out”.

This is the most important piece after making sure the first 5 are in order. Many, many actors leave this out or don’t take it seriously enough, especially actors who get work on some basis, thinking they don’t need it, and it is their biggest flaw.If you are a professional actor, your game needs to be at its best, the competition is fierce, and if you aren’t at the top of your work, you miss out. Professional athletes work out EVERYDAY, musicians practice their instruments EVERYDAY. I notice many actors are very lazy in this area. Look at Beyonce, a major superstar, she’s already made it. Yet she will dance 8 hours a day for weeks when preparing for her performances. Musicians practice hours and hours each day to get their material down. Ask yourself, how in shape are you? Are you prepared for your next gig? And what is your next gig? IT’S YOUR NEXT AUDITON!! That is where you have to perform your best, that is where your game needs to be at its best and played with brilliance.

Actors need a “home base”, a “gym” or a “center” where they can work and hone their craft.

A place they can go to work on themselves so when they go in to audition they are playing their best. Just like an athlete has a training gym, a musician has a practice room or studio, an actor needs a “work out home”. It also can serve as a support system.

Good isn’t enough, you need to be great.

Being a professional actor is akin to the training of an Olympic Athlete or professional musician, constantly in practice and keeping in great shape. So I ask you, do you have that support system in place? I don’t mean periodic classes for education, or a one day seminar, or a casting director or agent workshop. I mean regular working on your instrument. Constant pushing yourself to be your best, breaking through your blocks, stretching yourself into uncomfortable emotional places, so you are performing with truth, passion, and conviction. FIND ONE. I don’t care if it’s a bunch of actors in your living room a few times a week, a theater company that works out regularly, an acting class that challenges you, but every actor needs to be watched, coached, pushed, and challenged. You can’t do that alone. You can’t do that in a casting director workshop, because that is a “performance opportunity”. You need to be in shape prior to those, as that is where you present your greatness, not work on it.

There are many places that offer the “working out” atmosphere.

There are great teachers, coaches, schools, and theater companies out there. Check them out, audit, get referrals, and see where working actors are training. Find one that geographically works for you, so there is no excuse. Find one that is financially reasonable that fits into your budget, and finally a coach that “sees you”, “gets you”, and is there for you. Every actor needs to be watched and coached, just like an athlete. You must be disciplined like an athlete to make it in this business. If you’re not, then be honest with yourself, and enjoy the hobby of it. There’s nothing wrong with that if that is what you want.I come to this conclusion from observing and coaching actors for nearly 30 years. Those that treat their acting career as a marathon, and train as such, are the ones that have succeeded.

Don’t just get in shape, you need to stay in shape, and play in shape. You never know where your break is waiting.
